There are many little-used approaches that result in a better highway or bridge project. Among the benefits of such approaches are that they're faster, safer, have less impact on traffic, provide better quality, and at less cost.
A key to getting innovations into wider use is telling people about them. Here are several tools for spreading the word on innovations.
Providing assistance to general industry in promoting late phase technology development
Highways for LIFE provides State DOTs with funding for construction of projects using one or more innovations that the agency has rarely used previously.
The methods and priority given to the actual process for getting innovations and new technologies moved into common practice must be improved in order to accelerate their delivery. Test cases, called "vanguard technologies" have demonstrated excellent results.

Welcome to the HfL Project Demonstration Showcases
The purpose of the project demonstration showcase is to accelerate the adoption of innovations and technologies, thereby improving highway safety and quality while reducing congestion caused by construction. Information will be gathered from these demonstration projects to be shared with the whole transportation community.
HfL projects are intended to demonstrate and promote innovative technologies and practices. Incentive funding is therefore intended to support application of technologies and practices that have been proven, but are not yet widely used. The kinds of efforts that will be funded include state–of–the–art technologies, elevated performance goals, and new business practices.
To view images and read detailed descriptions about each project, click on the icons on the map. On the right hand side of the page, use the options to filter by year or activity type.
