ArrowIowa DOT Prefabricated Bridge Elements & Systems (PBES) Showcase

Council Bluffs, IA
October 28, 2011

Prefabricated bridge elements and systems (PBES) are bridge components, or entire structures that are built offsite or adjacent to the existing structure. Use of PBES offers a number of advantages over conventional cast–in–place bridge construction methods.

The Iowa DOT is replacing the US 6 Bridge over Keg Creek using prefabricated elements that are produced at the job site! The Prefabricated Elements include abutting deck/beam elements, straddle caps, columns, parapets, and approach slabs. The project will use ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) for the deck closure joints and will be the first structure in the U.S. that uses UHPC in the transverse continuity joints. The project will utilize a self-compacting backfill concept for rapid abutment construction - and will be constructed in its entirety using conventional on-site construction equipment.

Combining the use of PBES with innovative materials and innovative methods of construction and contracting will limit traffic disruptions to only 14 days.

This showcase will include a half-day technical workshop followed by a site visit of the project.

Workshop Details:

This one day workshop will begin on Friday, October 28 at 8:00am with check-in and registration opening at 7:30am. We will have a ½ day of technical session on the technologies and the project, followed by a visit to the active construction site. We will then return to the hotel and adjourn at 3:30pm.

A tentative draft Agenda is available. All information is subject to change.
