(Kelly, coauthor with Quinta Scott of the excellent, Route 66: The Highway and Its People, tells the story of Oklahoma highway official Cyrus Avery, who literally helped put Route 66 on the map of U.S. highway system in 1926 and found the perfect number for it.)

(Part of the American Girl Collection, this book is Molly McIntire's "scrapbook" of her 1946 trip along Route 66 from Illinois to California. Like any good scrapbook, it includes menus, pull-out souvenirs, tickets, brochures, and photographs taken along the way. This book is for ages 8 and up.)
