Minnesota and national surveys rate traffic congestion as aprimary public concern. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is the use of technology to provide safer and more efficient transportation,
whether by car, truck, train or bus. Some common uses of new technologies are advanced traffic signal systems which adjust instantly to
traffic changes and video surveillance of traffic as seen on the local morning news programs. The FHWA does extensive development work on new technologies with MnDOT, many county and city traffic departments, the University of Minnesota and local technology companies.
Traffic Operations includes the use of ITS in transportation and the methods and procedures used by traffic engineers to manage the design
of roads, the design of traffic control systems, the best operation of traffic control systems and procurement traffic control systems.
FHWA funds the design, construction, operations (including staff) and maintenance of traffic control systems.
