PROCEEDINGS OF THE SEPTEMBER 2000 POST EARTHQUAKE HIGHWAY RESPONSE AND RECOVERY SEMINAR HELD IN ST. LOUIS MISSOURI
WELCOME REMARKS BY ED GRAY
ED GRAY: Good morning. I'm Ed Gray, the earthquake program manager for the Missouri Emergency Management Agency in which we use the generic term State Emergency Management, so we call it SEMA.
We are in the last of the nuclear built fallout shelters under the old civil defense plans. If you're ever in Jefferson City, please come by and see the Missouri National Guard Training Site, the Ike Skelton Training Site.
Anyway, it is my pleasure to introduce to several wonderful speakers today. One is a new friend and one is an old friend. First is on the Turkish earthquake, which would be about a year ago next week, August.
Jim Cooper is the technical director for bridge research and development for the Federal Highway Administration, the Office of Infrastructure Research and Development. Basically he takes a look at your bridges after a disaster and he's going to talk a little bit about the infrastructures. He is a member of EERI. He's also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He's a Registered Professional Engineer and a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.
I'd like to talk just one second about the ASCE. We have a group similar to California called the Safe Coalition that goes out and does post-earthquake damage assessment. Bill Durban, who I just saw walk in, was one of our past chairman of that group. It's Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, ASCE second of all, and the AIA. They're all volunteers. So if you see in your journal the next time you receive it, there's ATC training going on, I would like to encourage you to come and join our group.
