About FHWA Montana DivisionThe Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), established in 1967 as one of the operating administrations of the Department of Transportation (U. S. DOT), has been a federal agency under different names since 1893. FHWA was formerly known as the Office of Road Inquiry and the Bureau of Public Roads. The current organizational structure of the agency consists of the Washington, D.C. Office (headquarters), a Resource Center (4 locations), 52 Division Offices, 4 Metropolitan Offices and three Federal Lands Highway Offices. The Montana Division represents FHWA in Big Sky Country, administering the federal-aid highway program. FHWA's Montana staff work closely with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), Tribal governments, and local transportation organizations.
