FHWA Enhances Simulation Capabilities

The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) Human Factors Team has enhanced its capability to simulate an actual city using existing data. This capability will allow researchers on FHWA’s Human Factors Team to carry out cutting-edge research and examine road user behaviors in topics such as Connected and Automated Vehicle Systems, innovative intersection and roadway designs, and new traffic management and operations strategies.

This video shows this enhanced simulation capability in a virtual drive along Kalakaua Avenue in the Waikiki Beach area of Honolulu, Hawaii. For the Waikiki simulation, researchers used data and information available from the Hawaii Department of Transportation and acquired commercial-off-the-shelf software to effectively replicate a driving scenario at the Waikiki Beach area
