The Structural Engineering Section works with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and is responsible for structure related Planning, Design, Construction, Inspection, and Maintenance activities.

In Planning, the Section reviews all environmental documents that include overpasses and water crossings. In Design, the Section reviews all National Highway System and major bridge construction projects (including specifications, foundation recommendations, and hydraulics aspects) to ensure conformity to the current AASHTO design standards. In Construction, the Section oversees processes and construction problems. In Inspection, the Section monitors all North Carolina bridges in the National Bridge Inventory for compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). In Maintenance, the Section monitors that bridge problems and bridge signs are repaired or replaced in a timely manner.

The Structural Engineering Section also coordinates periodic reviews with the NCDOT in order to improve practices and standard procedures. The Annual "FHWA/NCDOT Spring Field Trip" and the "NBIS review" are examples of these reviews.
