A new joint publication released by NACE and the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) titled, "Low Cost Local Road Safety Solutions," was made available to NACE members April 9-13 during the 2006 NACE Annual Conference in Grand Rapids, MI. The 39-page booklet contains 16 examples of numerous low-cost solutions that address roadway safety issues such as signs and pavement marking improvements, rumble strips, longitudinal channelizers and roadside cable barriers. The concise studies were compiled by the Texas Transportation Institute. The booklet also contains a section titled, "How Can I Conduct a Crash Study," as well as a list of current resources on the overall topic.

Fatalities on NJ's roadways are on the rise!
Year to date traffic related fatalities for 2006 are 12% higher when compared to the same time last year.

For many years, some engineers have had concerns that drivers turning left on a permissive circular green signal indication might inadvertently mistake that indication as implying the left turn has the right of way over opposing traffic, especially under some geometric conditions.
FHWA has issued an Interim Approval for the optional use of a flashing yellow arrow signal indication as the signal display for left-turn movements during permissive turn intervals at signalized locations.

The latest proposed rulemaking on minimum maintained Retroreflectivity was published in the Federal Register on May 8, 2006, where the FHWA proposes the following key changes to the MUTCD:
(1) Add a STANDARD statement to Section 2A.09 that reads, "Public agencies or officials having jurisdiction shall use an assessment or management method to maintain traffic sign retroreflectivity at or above the minimum levels established in the guidance below."
(2) Include the table of minimum retroreflectivity levels in the MUTCD.

SAFETEA-LU established a Safe Routes to School Program funded at $612 million over 5 years. The purpose of the program is to enable and encourage primary and secondary school children to safely walk and bicycle to school. The program establishes two distinct types of funding opportunities: infrastructure projects and non-infrastructure related activities such as education, enforcement and encouragement programs. In addition, the program provides funding for a National Safe Routes to School Clearinghouse.
The National Safe Routes to School Clearinghouse is a centralized resource of information on successful Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs and strategies. Users of this site will find information on how to start and sustain a Safe Routes to School program, case studies of successful programs as well as many other resources for training and technical assistance.
