Pedestrian & Bicycles Intersection Safety Indices

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Intersection Safety Indices (Ped ISI and Bike ISI) are a set of models that enable users to identify intersection crossings and intersection approach legs that should be the greatest priority for undergoing in depth pedestrian and bicycle safety assessment. Using observable characteristics of an intersection crossing or approach leg, such as number of lanes and traffic volume, the tool produces a safety index score, with higher scores indicating greater priority for an in depth safety assessment. Each leg of an intersection may have different characteristics affecting pedestrian or bicyclist safety; therefore, the tool is intended to provide a rating of the safety of an individual crossing (Ped ISI) or approach leg(Bike ISI) rather than evaluating the intersection as a whole. A practitioner can use the tool to develop a prioritization scheme for a group of pedestrian crossings or bicyclist approaches. This method enables the practitioner to prioritize and proactively address sites that are the most likely to be a safety concern for pedestrians or bicyclists without having to wait for crashes to occur.

PUT THE BRAKES ON FATALITIES DAY
October 10, 2007

More than 700 people lose their lives each year on NJ’s roadways. Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day is celebrated on October 10th each year to encourage the public to take a greater stand in keeping themselves and their loved ones from becoming one of these statistics. Please help us promote a day of zero traffic deaths by encouraging safer behavior and actions and promoting safer roadways.

You can participate! Visit http://www.brakesonfatalities.org/

NHTSA 2007 Speed Campaign Tool Kit

NHTSA has developed print, radio, and TV marketing materials that can be used to support speed management programs at the State and local level. The resources available to you can be used in several capacities and are built on two message platforms:
Social Norming – Stop Speeding Before It Stops You
Enforcement - Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine

The items in this toolkit can be tailored to best fit your local needs and are available at:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/speed/toolkit/index.cfm

Transportation Planner's Safety Desk Reference

The Transportation Planner's Safety Desk Reference describes an overview of transportation safety, the potential roles that transportation planners can play to advance it, a framework for incorporating safety into the transportation planning process, potential funding sources, and a menu of possible safety strategies within 17 emphasis areas.

Each emphasis area section provides an overview of the problem, data defining the problem, and descriptions of strategies that are most relevant to planners. When available, accident modification factors are included that can be used to determine the reduction in crashes anticipated from specific safety improvements. Each section also provides lists of additional resources and best practices, when available.

Rail-Highway Grade Crossing Handbook

FHWA recently published an update to the Rail-Highway Grade Crossing Handoook. The handbook provides general information on highway-rail crossings; characteristics of the crossing environment and users; and the physical and operational improvements that can be made at highway-rail grade crossings to enhance the safety and operation of both highway and rail traffic over grade crossings. The Handbook is available online at:

12 Months of Traffic Safety Public Outreach Campaign

The 12 Months of Safety brochures and posters are in the process of being updated to reflect current statistics and new laws. In addition, several additional traffic safety issues will be highlighted, including: Helmets and Wheels, Young Drivers and Drowsy Driving. As the materials are developed and updated, they will be available at:

Work Zone Safety and Mobility Peer-to-Peer Program

The FHWA has established a Work Zone Peer-to-Peer Program to provide short-term assistance to agencies interested in the application of methods, tools, and strategies to improve work zone safety and mobility. The Work Zone P2P Program provides state and local transportation agencies easy access to knowledgeable peers across a wide range of work zone issues, all at no cost to these agencies.
