Figure 2: Travel on U.S. highways by month. This image is a line graph which compares monthly travel on rural highways and urban highways. Travel on urban highways fluctuated between 4.25 and 4.53 billion miles. Travel on rural highways fluctuated between 2.63 and 2.82 miles. The highest travel period for both urban and rural highways was from May to September, during the years 1999 thru 2001.
