What are IC workshops?Intelligent Compaction (IC) is an equipment-based technology for better quality control that results in longer pavement lives. IC machines are vibratory rollers with accelerometers mounted on the axel of drums, global positioning system, infra-red temperature sensors (for asphalt), and on-board computers that can display color-coded maps in real-time to track roller passes, asphalt surface temperatures, and stiffness of compacted materials. Due to IC is relatively new to most DOT and contractors, IC workshops are crucial for bringing people up to speed on implementation of IC technology to improve compaction quality of materials that include granular soils, cohesive soils, stabilized base, and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements. To accelerate the implementation of IC, the IC workshops aim for technology transfer and basic training in a day. The purposes of the IC workshops are to:
Who Should Attend?IC workshops are designed for all levels of professionals in the earthwork and paving industry:
How to request an IC workshop?Contact Dr. Chang if you are interested in hosting or attending an IC workshop. Dr. George K. Chang, P.E. The Transtec Group 6111 Balcones Dr., Austin Texas 78731, U.S.A. How Can I Register for an IC Workshop?Generally, you may register for specific workshops online through the IC workshop webpages. Occasionally, registration may need to go through a local workshop hosts or organizer. Are There Different Types of IC Workshops? What is the Best for Me?To address the specific needs of a diverse group of users, we offer two workshops: the "Essential IC workshop" and "Practical IC workshop". Essential IC WorkshopThe fundamentals of intelligent compaction and compaction quality control/assurance are emphasized in this workshop. A descriptive approach will be taken using images and providing the participants with "must-know" concepts. Simple case studies will be used to direct the participants through a complete process of IC. Practical IC WorkshopTo fit the needs of IC practitioner, we offer this workshop which explores IC on its practical sides. With limited IC fundamental material be presented as a refresher, the effort will instead be concentrated on step-by-step planning, field implementation, and data management with the Veda IC viewing and analysis software. A more advanced set of hands-on workshop examples will be used to demonstrate how to make IC work for various field conditions and materials. |
