FWD Calibration

Falling-Weight Deflectometers (FWD) are critical for highway monitoring activities. FWDs, however, must be properly calibrated and used or else measurements taken will be inaccurate. To address this issue, the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and LTPP developed a set of standardized FWD calibration procedures and also set up four regional FWD calibration centers. The procedures were subsequently adopted as an AASHTO provisional standard, "Practice for Calibrating the Load Cell and Deflection Sensors for a Falling-Weight Deflectometer."

To help highway agencies better understand FWD calibration procedures, a videotape was produced by FHWA through a cooperative agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation that explains LTPP's FWD calibration procedures.

Additional information on the FWD calibration is available via the buttons in the upper right-hand corner. This information includes:

  • FWD Videotapes Product Brief - Provides a short description of the product, along with its key features and system requirements.

  • PowerPoint Presentation (0.3 mb) - Provides a basic presentation on the procedure that details why and how it was developed.

  • Order Videotapes - For more information on the product brief /presentation, or to order the videotapes, contact:
