Planning
As microsimulation is seeing greater use in transportation planning, microdata (individual records) will be in greater demand. The Census 2000 Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) is a key data source because of the breadth of the sample. Thus, transportation involvement in the delineation of the geographic reporting areas for PUMS is important.
The definition of PUMAs (Public User Microdata Areas) is managed by the Census Bureau Geography Division with participation by the State Data Centers. Interested transportation agencies should contact their State Data Center if they would like to be involved. The due date for submission of PUMA equivalency files to the Census Bureau is August 31, 2001.
