Border Versus Corridor Awards
Section 1119 TEA-21 was for projects in border regions. Based on previous international treaties, FHWA determined the border region was up to 100 km from an international land border. The border region, including the area near Mexico, the area near the south Border of Canada and the portion of Alaska near the west border of Canada together constitute about 8% of the land area of the U.S.
Of the approximately $1.102 billion in FY 1999-2003 funds that have been awarded:
-
About 14% has been for projects in the border region.
-
About 81% has been for projects that are not within the border region.
-
About 5% has been for projects that are partially within and partially not within the border region. Examples of this include the Multistate I-35 ITS planning projects of FY 1999 and FY 2000 and the "I-69 Corridor, Texas" project of FY 2001.
