Manning Avenue (Fresno, California) Corridor Initiative
Statement by Martin Weiss
A statement by Martin Weiss, Team Leader, National Systems and Economic Development Team, Office of Interstate and Border Planning, FHWA.
On April 5, 2005, I visited the corridor in company with Wade Hobbs of the California Division of the FHWA and State and local officials.
The visit served two purposes. The first; was to thank and recognize the cooperation of government and non-government officials in the Manning Ave Corridor study. This study is available at: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/econdev/manning.htm
The second; was to get a first had look at the corridor a few years after the study (which was completed in 2002). Subsequent to the FHWA, a number of other studies had been done which, in one way or another relate to that corridor. The 2002 study had forecast that if the corridor was substantially improved, the prospects for greater employment in the corridor would improve. What actually happened was that only minimal improvements in the corridor were made (e.g., some improvements in the appearance of the median and roadside). Similarly, no obvious improvements were observed in the business environment with one exception. This exception was that an area had been established as a business park and some work was being done, on the day of the trip, to place this business park in service.
This is part of the Manning Avenue corridor recently zoned for an industrial park. It is in Parlier. April 5, 2005
