Map 3. A map showing the three alternative alignments from Columbus, Georgia, to Macon, Georgia; the three alternative alignments around Macon, Georgia, and the three alternative alignments from Macon, Georgia, to Augusta, Georgia.
From Columbus, Georgia, Alternative 1 would construct a new highway built to Interstate design standards, from US 80 near its intersection with Interstate 185 to Interstate 75, near Byron, Georgia. The new alignment would be north of the existing Fall Line Freeway.
Alternatives 2 and 3 would both follow the existing Fall Line Freeway from Columbus to Interstate 75 near Byron, Georgia. Under Alternative 2 only minor improvements would be made to the existing highway. Under alternative 3, this section of the existing Fall Line Freeway would be upgraded to Highway design standards, including a 4-lane divided highway and grade separated interchanges, where practical. From Byron, Georgia,
Alternative 1 would follow Interstate 75 north to Interstate 16 and then follow Interstate 16 south to US 23/129 (Ocmulgee East Boulevard).
Alternative 1 would follow US 23/129 north to US 80 and then US 80 east to Georgia State Route 57. All non-Interstate roads would be upgraded to Interstate design standards.
Alternative 2 would follow Interstate 75 north from Byron to Interstate 16 and then follow Interstate 16 south to US 80/129 (Coliseum Drive). It would then follow US 80 east to Georgia State Route 57.
Alternative 3 would follow Georgia State Route 49 east from Interstate 75 near Byron to Avondale Mill Road, to its intersection with State Route 247. It would then follow the proposed Sgoda Road Extension on a new alignment to its Intersection with Interstate 16. From there it would follow a proposed highway on a new alignment northeast to its intersection with Georgia State Route 57.
From Macon to Augusta, Alternative 1 would construct a new highway built to Interstate design standards from Georgia State Route 57 northeast to Interstate 20 near its intersection with US 221. It would then follow Interstate 20 to its intersection with Interstate 520 near Augusta. Alteratives 2 and 3 would follow the current alignment of the Fall Line Freeway from State Route 57 to Interstate 520 near Augusta. The only difference would be near Wrens, Georgia.
Alternative 2 would upgrade US 1 through Wrens to arterial design standards, while Alternative 3 would construct a highway bypass on a new alignment around Wrens.
