Berkeley, CA: The Ed Roberts Campus Project (FY 2000)
Connie Soper, Metropolitan Transportation Commission
|In partnership with the City of Berkeley and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) -- the MPO for the San Francisco Bay Area - is applying its $300,000 TCSP grant to fund the design phase of a center for independent living for people with disabilities. The project will combine transit village concepts with public policy and community support to transform an underutilized, urban mass transit site into an attractive centerpiece for a revitalized community. |
The Ed Roberts Campus, named in memory of a disabled advocate who played a prominent role in the disabled rights movement, will house a consortium of nine organizations that have joined to form one non-profit corporation. The center will be located on top of the Ashby BART station in Berkeley, which is currently the most underutilized station in the system. The center will be developed specifically as a transit-oriented development, as transit is expected to be the primary mode of transportation for its residents and employees. MTC is using its TCSP grant to identify preliminary design options, complete the selection of a project alternative, and apply for a city permit to begin construction.
