Exhibit 5-9 is a bar graph that shows highway fatalities by type in 2000. The vertical axis has 9 bars, one for each type of highway fatality. The horizontal axis measures the number of fatalities from 0 to 18,000 in increments of 2,000. Fatalities involving alcohol led with 16,653, followed by single-vehicle run-off-the-road fatalities with 15,905. There were 12,350 speeding-related fatalities in 2000, 8,632 intersection-related fatalities, and 5,587 interstate highway fatalities. 4,739 fatalities involved pedestrians, 3,318 involved trees, 1,093 happened in work zones, and 690 involved bicyclists.
