Status of the Nation's Highways, Bridges, and Transit:
2002 Conditions and Performance Report

Exhibit 6-26:

Public Funding for Transit, 1956-2000

Exhibit 6-26

Exhibit 6-26 is a chart that shows public funding for transit from 1956 to 2000. The vertical axis measures dollars from 0 to 16,000 million in increments of 5,000 million. The horizontal axis measures each year from 1956 to 2000 in increments of 2 years. There are four lines, one for each type of public funding. The first line, for State and local constant, has the highest numbers; it starts at 3,000 million from 1956 to 1962, then rises to 8,000 million in 1975. The line then fluctuates between 7,000 and 9,000 million through 1984 before rising to a peak of 14,000 million in 1994 and settling at 13,500 million in 2000. The second line, for State and local current, roughly parallels the constant line, but at smaller levels. It starts at 500 million from 1956 to 1964, rises gradually to 6,000 million by 1985, then rises more sharply to a peak of 13,000 million by 1994 before settling at 12,500 million in 2000. The third line, for Federal constant, is practically at 0 from 1956 to 1968 before rising sharply to a peak of more than 6,000 million in 1980. From there it declines to 35,000 million in 1994 and rises to 5,000 million in 2000. The last line, for Federal current, also is around 0 from 1956 to 1968, rising to 4,000 million by 1984. From there the line stays steady around 3,000 to 3,500 until 1994, when it rises to about 5,000 million in 2000.
