FHWA's First Environmental Statesmanship Award Goes to Pennsylvania's Transportation Secretary Mallory

The Federal Highway Administration's first Environmental Statesmanship Award has been awarded to Bradley L. Mallory, Pennsylvania's Secretary of Transportation (PennDOT). The award recognizes individuals whose high standard of commitment contributes in a positive way to both the environment and transportation.

"President Bush has asked us to help protect the environment for our children and grandchildren," FHWA Administrator Mary E. Peters said. "With leaders like Brad, we can be assured of a legacy of clean water, clean air and natural beauty and a safe and efficient transportation system. He has shown that protecting the environment, improving surface transportation and enhancing our quality of life can go hand-in-hand."

Under Mallory's leadership, PennDOT has increased transit ridership; added hundreds of miles of new walkways and bikeways; and benefited from programs like wetland banking, land-use planning and environmental research.

At the award ceremony Mallory said, "I strongly believe that a commitment to the environment is crucial if we are to move transportation forward both in Pennsylvania and around the nation. We at PennDOT are working hard to be good environmental stewards as we provide a safe, swift and smooth transportation experience."

FHWA Executive Director Frederick "Bud" Wright, presented the award to Mallory on Sunday during the spring meeting of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in Farmington, PA. The FHWA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
