Federal Highway Administration Ranked Eighth Among U.S. Government’s ‘Best Places to Work’

Agency’s Third Straight Year in Top Ten Underscores Quality of Workforce

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration was named the eighth best place to work in the federal government Tuesday by the Partnership for Public Service. The annual ranking compares 389 federal agencies and subcomponents.

“I see each day the commitment to public service throughout the Department of Transportation, and it makes me very proud to see the results of this survey reflect that,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “The FHWA’s nearly 3,000 employees deserve this important recognition. Because of their professionalism, and passion for innovation and public service, the nation’s roads and bridges are safer for millions of our fellow Americans.”

The new rankings make it the third consecutive year the agency has been listed in the top 10. Federal employees were surveyed about their respective workplaces between April and June.

“The work we do makes a real difference in people’s daily lives, and all of our employees understand that,” said Acting Federal Highway Administrator Gregory Nadeau. “The role our people play in keeping the public safe is what makes working at FHWA so worthwhile. Our employees make every day count, and their enthusiasm makes our agency a truly great place to work.”

Published in the Partnership for Public Service’s 2014 “Best Places to Work Index,” the rankings are based on the Office of Personnel Management’s Best Places to Work in the Federal Government Survey, which analyzes data collected from nearly 400,000 federal workers to produce a detailed view of employee satisfaction and commitment. The U.S. Department of Transportation survey was conducted earlier this year.

Agency subcomponents are not only measured on overall employee satisfaction, but they are scored in 13 workplace categories, such as effective leadership, training, employee skills/mission match, support for diversity and pay. The FHWA is ranked in the top tier of every category, and improved its scores in teamwork and work/life balance.
