FHWA Solicits Comments on Creation of National Tunnel Inspection StandardsThe Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is soliciting comments on the establishment of National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS). The NTIS would set minimum tunnel inspection standards that would apply to all Federal-aid highway tunnels on public roads. FHWA has proposed modeling the NTIS after the existing National Bridge Inspection Standards, as applicable. The NTIS would include requirements for inspection procedures for structural elements and functional systems, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and ventilation systems; qualifications for inspectors; inspection frequency; and the creation of a National Tunnel Inventory. Comments must be received on or before September 20, 2010. All comments should include Docket No. FHWA-2008-0038. Comments can be submitted via mail, fax, or electronically. Mail: Docket Management Facility U.S. Department of Transportation 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20590-0001 Fax: 202-493-2251 Online: www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#submitComment?R=0900006480b1ef72 For a link to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, visit www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#docketDetail?R=FHWA-2008-0038.
