Over the past 5 years, the FHWA Office of Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) produced more than 300 publications to disseminate the results of laboratory research at FHWA's Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC). This research helps transportation specialists, engineers, designers, policymakers, and others continue to develop and maintain the Nation's highway system. The office recently compiled a list of all available technical publications produced between October 1998 and September 2003, indexing them in an easy-to-read format divided into several categories. The 58-page catalog summarizes TFHRC technical research publications, which include Application Notes, Product Briefs, Fact Sheets, CD-ROMs, Technical Reports, and TechBriefs, and provides information about where and how to access the materials or obtain hard copies (if available).
The catalog divides publications by subject area. Publications in the "Environment" category deal with transportation-environment issues like air quality, emissions standards, and the use of recycled materials in highway facilities. Listings under "Human Factors" include TechBriefs and technical reports pertaining to driver behavior for a variety of population subsets. Under "Operations," readers can find reports on technologies such as advanced traveler information systems, global positioning systems, and various intelligent transportation systems. Under the "Pavements" category, the catalog features Product Briefs that describe new technologies— especially software programs—relating to pavement construction and performance. The Pavements category also includes an extensive listing of Technical Reports and TechBriefs and provides tips on pavement maintenance, including repairing potholes and sealing and filling cracks in asphalt pavements. In the "Safety" section, a variety of TechBriefs and Technical Reports feature tools developed to improve traffic safety and tests performed to evaluate those tools. Finally, the "Structures" category showcases publications on bridges and other transportation structures.
Each listing in the catalog features the title of the publication, the publication number, a short description of the item, and in most cases, a Web site where users can access the publication online. Using this information, readers can view materials instantly online, or if they desire, order copies of the publications.
