The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Infrastructure Research and Development (HRDI), in partnership with the Office of Bridge Technology and the Resource Center’s Geotechnical and Hydraulics Technical Services Team, would like to announce the availability of the Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS) Synthesis Report (FHWA-HRT-11-027).  The GRS-IBS Synthesis Report is the companion document to the GRS-IBS Interim Implementation Guide (FHWA-HRT-11-026), which was disseminated to our field offices by memorandum dated January 21, 2011, in support of the FHWA’s Every Day Counts initiative, which is aimed at accelerating implementation of proven, market-ready technologies.

The GRS-IBS Synthesis Report provides engineers with the necessary background knowledge and fundamental characteristics of GRS technology.  The research behind the proposed design method in the report, which was adopted in the Interim Implementation Guide, is presented along with case histories to show the performance of in-service GRS-IBSs and GRS abutments

The GRS-IBS Synthesis Report can be downloaded from the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center website at the following link:

Please inform your appropriate State DOT representative of the availability of this Report.  We also plan to disseminate a limited number of copies of this report under a separate memorandum by early spring 2011.

If you have any questions, please contact Michael Adams (HRDI-40) at mike.adams@dot.gov, Dr. Jennifer Nicks (HRDI-40) at jennifer.nicks@dot.gov, or Daniel Alzamora, Resource Center-Lakewood, at daniel.alzamora@dot.gov.
