The National Highway Institute (NHI) offers the following training courses related to real estate program activities. NHI training is provided to sponsoring agencies at a subsidized rate. Therefore, space for up to 15 percent of the maximum number of participants specified for a given course is reserved for FHWA employees to attend without charge.

Basic Relocation - NHI # 141029
A 3-day introductory course on relocation issues associated with the Uniform Act and implementing regulations. The course is designed for the beginning relocation agent and should broaden the knowledge of those engaged in the relocation of persons as a result of the acquisition of real property required for a Federal or federally-assisted project. (The cost is $400 per participant with a minimum class size of 20 and a maximum of 30.) This course is undergoing a formal NHI update to reflect current Federal regulations. The updated course will include adult-learning enhancements and new case studies. It will be available for presentation in fiscal year 2007.
Advanced Relocation - NHI # 141030
A 3-day course designed for the application of problem solving skills to difficult issues associated with the Uniform Act and implementing regulations. The course goes beyond the basic functional areas of relocation assistance and concentrates on areas of specific concern. A general knowledge of 49 CFR Part 24 and the Uniform Relocation Act is required. (The cost is $400 per participant with a minimum class size of 20 and a maximum of 30.)
Business Relocation - NHI # 141031
A 3-day course designed to increase the knowledge of personnel engaged in the relocation of businesses, farms, and non-profit organizations. The main topics include: (1) Eligibility for Federal Participation; (2) Moving Payments; (3) Advisory Services; (4) Actual Direct Loss of Tangible Personal Property; (5) Purchase of Substitute Personal Property; (6) Fixed Payments (in lieu of); (7) Reestablishment Expense. (The cost is $400 per participant with a minimum class size of 20 and a maximum of 30.)
Appraisal for Federal-Aid Highway Programs - NHI # 141043
A 2-day course designed to help transportation professionals understand and conform with the appraisal requirements of the Uniform Act and 49 CFR Part 24. It is intended for experienced appraisal personnel and focuses on preparing, presenting, and understanding appraisal reports in conformance with the Uniform Act. Additionally, the course addresses the appraiser's role in the overall project development process and how an appraiser's expertise can assist in completing a transportation project effectively and efficiently. (The cost is $270 per participant with a minimum class size of 20 and a maximum of 30.)
