Five Goals That Keep Us Connected

  • Safety
  • Mobility
  • Productivity
  • Human and Natural Environment
  • National Security

To meet the challenges of the 21st century, and the post-Interstate era, FHWA conducted regional forums and focus groups across America to determine what trends and possible events may affect future transportation needs. During these forums, we received invaluable input from citizens, members of Congress, state and local government leaders, transportation operators, freight and transit representatives, business and labor leaders, safety advocates, and environmentalists. From this information, we formulated a new vision and mission for our agency.

FHWA Vision:
Create the best transportation system in the world.

FHWA Mission:
Continually improve the quality of our nation's highway system and its intermodal connections.

After examining what we had achieved and where we wanted to go, we pinpointed and developed five key strategic goals. The five goals are Safety, Mobility, Productivity, the Human and Natural Environment, and National Security.

Our goals are aligned with DOT's strategic goals, and our progress in achieving them will contribute to the overall transportation goals of the nation.
