Numerical Modeling of Fluid Structure Interaction

Computational Modeling of Fluid-Structure Interaction Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Large Eddy Simulation (LES), and Moving Grids
Phases I–III

Aeroelastic computational modeling of fluid-structure interaction on bridge deck sections. Development of state- of-the-art numerical models coupling finite element analysis and advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques including large eddy simulation. These phases focused on solver algorithm development and application to bridge deck sections. This is a completed project.

Computational Modeling of Fluid-Structure Interaction Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), LES, and Moving Grids
Phases IV–V

Aeroelastic computational modeling of fluid-structure interaction on bridge deck sections. Development of state- of-the-art numerical models coupling finite element analysis and advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques including large eddy simulation. These phases focused on further development of solver algorithms and application of complex moving grids with triangular elements. This is a completed project.

Computational Modeling of Truck Gust Loadings on Variable Message Sign (VMS) Structures Using STAR-CCM+ and LS-DYNA
Cutting-edge modeling of fluid-structure interaction through coupling of commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and computational structural mechanics (CSM) software. This project looks at the effects of ambient wind and truck-induced gusts on the dynamic performance and behavior of large, cantilevered VMS structures. This is an ongoing project.
