Project detail
Project Description:   Section 5309, Centers for Surface Transportation Excellence: Promote and support strategic national surface transportation programs and activities related to the work of State departments of transportation in the areas of environment, surface transportation safety, rural safety, and project finance.
Goals:   Develop and disseminate advanced transportation safety techniques and innovations.
Background Information:   Section 5309 of Public Law 109-59, the Safe, Accountable Flexible Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users, states that the Secretary of Transportation shall, "establish the Center for Excellence in Surface Transportation Safety at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute," and authorizes the sum of $750,000 per year for establishment of the Center. A cooperative agreement was awarded to develop a multiyear strategic plan that identifies the research required to meet the objectives of the Center. Individual research projects are proposed by the subject matter experts within the Center, and reviewed and approved by the Stakeholders’ Committee, which is comprised of representatives of the various organizations that provide funding for the Center.
