Project Description: The Rural Safety Innovation Program (RSIP) is one of several key programs under the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT’s) Rural Safety Initiative. Overall, the goal of the initiative is to improve safety on rural roads, resulting in a decrease in the loss of lives and injuries. The focus of this project is safety improvement projects undertaken by nine highway agencies. This evaluation will focus on three elements: (1) Determine the effectiveness of the specific countermeasures being implemented.(2) Conduct a qualitative assessment of the implementation experience of the grantees to facilitate a “lessons learned” discussion.(3) Assess the quantitative impact of the projects in improving safety.
