Office: Office of Infrastructure Research and Development
Team:Infrastructure Management Team
Roadmap/Focus area(s): Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:The project will perform a literature search to identify nondestructive evaluation (NDE) systems suitable for gusset-plate inspection, and then procure these systems as necessary. Preliminary laboratory research will be performed to determine the capabilities and limitations of these nondestructive evaluation (NDE) systems on single plate configurations. Investigation into available technologies for nested configurations will be performed. Detailed inspection procedures will be outlined to use the advanced NDE systems and document the results to provide permanent digital records. Suitable systems will be deployed in the field as a demonstration. The results of the project will be incorporated into the Nondestructive Evaluation Web Manual. A detailed final report will be developed outlining the guidelines and the procedures for the use of the advanced NDE systems for inspection of gusset plates.
Laboratories: Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Laboratory
Start Date: February 8, 2010
End Date: February 7, 2014
Goals:
The key project objective is to enhance single connection and multiconnection gusset-plate inspection capabilities beyond visual inspections by using advanced nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies, and providing a better understanding of the section losses due to corrosion by accurately measuring and determining the thickness of the gusset plates.
Test Methodology: Analytical, Experimental, and Field Verification
Partners:
  • , , ; Role(s):
  • Southwest Research Institute; Role(s): Technical
Expected Benefits:The expected benefit is improved safety through better inspection of gusset plates.
Deliverables:1. Name: Web Manual Module
