Project ID:FHWA-PROJ-10-0056
Project Name: Clarus Data for Weather-Responsive Traffic Signal System Applications
Status: Completed
Contact:Last Name:   Yang
First Name:   David
Telephone:  202-493-3284
E-mail:         david.yang@dot.gov
Organization:Federal Highway Administration - Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC)
Office: Office of Operations Research and Development
Team: Trans Ops Concepts and Analysis Team
Roadmap/Focus area(s): Intersections
Project Description: The proposed system will receive weather information from the Federal Highway Administration's Clarus system database, analyze it, and make necessary changes to signal timing parameters in response to inclement weather conditions. The proposed system will operate and achieve its potential using current traffic controller and controller cabinet technologies. Minimal hardware, in addition to traffic controllers, will be required for full implementation. Software design will incorporate self-diagnostic techniques for fault detection and recovery to maximize security and minimize cost.
Laboratories: Not Applicable
Start Date: September 24, 2010
End Date: December 30, 2011
Funding Amount:$79,820.00
FHWA Program Name: Other
Goals: The key project objective is to develop a prototype of a real-time weather-responsive traffic signal control system to improve the efficiency and safety of traffic signal operations during inclement weather.
Project Type: Offsite
Background Information: Data not yet available
Test Methodology: Computer-driven algorithms will implement traffic signal control decisions using Clarus data; software design will incorporate self-diagnostic techniques for fault detection and recovery to maximize security and minimize cost.
