Project ID:FHWA-PROJ-11-0180
Project Name: Imaging of Aggregates Using Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) II
Status: Active
Contact:Last Name:   Meininger
First Name:   Richard C (Rick)
Telephone:  202-493-3191
E-mail:         richard.meininger@dot.gov
Organization:Federal Highway Administration - Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC)
Office: Office of Infrastructure Research and Development
Team: Pavement Materials Team
Roadmap/Focus area(s): Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description: Characterize all of the research fine and coarse aggregates used in pavement research at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) for concrete, asphalt, and granular base layers. Create an accessible database for use by all pavement researchers at TFHRC.
Laboratories: Aggregate and Petrographic Laboratory
Start Date: October 1, 2011
End Date: September 30, 2013
Funding Amount:$15,900,000.00
FHWA Program Name: Innovative Pavement Research and Deployment
Goals:
The objective is to characterize all of the research fine and coarse aggregates used in pavement research at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) for concrete, asphalt, and granular base layers. Contractor and Federal personnel calibrated the Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) II equipment and run shape, angularity, and texture scans on all the available research fine and coarse aggregates at TFHRC.

Develop an accessible database for use by all pavement researchers at TFHRC.
Project Type: Onsite
Background Information: The Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) II equipment is the product of the Federal Highway Association's (FHWA) Highways for Life interlaboratory study of precision by a number of highway materials laboratories.
Test Methodology: Characterize all of the research fine and coarse aggregates at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) using the Aggregate Imaging System (AIMS) II.
