Project ID:FHWA-PROJ-12-0039
Project Name: Laboratory Testing of Aggregates for Road and Bridge Construction
Status: Active
Contact:Last Name:   Nicks
First Name:   Jennifer E
Telephone:  202-493-3075
E-mail:         jennifer.nicks@dot.gov
Organization:Federal Highway Administration - Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC)
Office: Office of Infrastructure Research and Development
Team: Bridge and Foundation Engineering Team
Roadmap/Focus area(s): Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description: These projects will use standard and nonstandard specialized laboratory testing equipment to characterize aggregates used for road and bridge construction. The results of this research will provide new aggregate characterization methods that will benefit geotechnical and pavement engineers who incorporate these materials into their designs.
Laboratories: Geotechnical Laboratory
Start Date: April 1, 2013
End Date: September 3, 2015
Funding Amount:$0.00
FHWA Program Name: Innovative Bridge Research and Deployment
Goals: To evaluate the effect of various parameters on the measured strength of aggregates. First, comparisons between results from triaxial and direct shear testing will be performed for open and well graded aggregates. Additionally, scale effects will be evaluated for these aggregates.
