Project Description:   Complete prior Federal Highway Administration funded work to test a curved tube flange girder system to failure and report all the results from the project.
Goals:  
Produce final report on design, analysis, and tests on the Curved Tube Flange Girder specimen.
Background Information:   Under the previous Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center Structures Laboratory support services contract, DTFH61-04-C-00029, two separate task orders were initiated to study Tubular Flange Girder Systems for Curved Highway Bridges in a planned two-phase study. In Phases 1 and 2, the following tasks were completed:  Develop Curved Tube Flange Girder (CTFG) Specimen: A 2/3-scale model of a CTFG bridge system having two girders with a span of 90ft (27m), braced by three interior and two end diaphragms was designed.Initial Finite Element (FE) Analysis of Specimen: Nonlinear FE models of the CTFG specimen were developed and analyzed under dead load and erection conditions.Develop CTFG Fabrication Processes: Fabrication procedures were developed to curve the tubes of each CTFG to the appropriate horizontal curve for the CTFG specimen. Procedures for aligning and welding the tubes to the web were developed.Fabricate and Ship CTFG Specimen: The CTFG specimen was fabricated and shipped to Lehigh University.Build Test Set-up for Erecting CTFG Specimen: The CTFG specimen was tested under simulated erection conditions. Bearings for these tests were constructed.Develop and Build Reaction Component of Imposed Loading Setup: To test CTFG specimen under simulated deck placement conditions, the reaction components of an imposed loading test setup (to support the loads from hydraulic jacks) were designed and constructed. Related work conducted outside the scope of the two task orders included instrumenting and testing the CTFG specimen under erection conditions. These tests demonstrated the extraordinary stiffness of individual tubular flange girders for horizontally-curved bridges. The tasks to be completed under this task order (Task Order 12) include the following: Complete the imposed loading test setup.Finite element analysis of CTFG specimen under deck placement conditions.Instrument and test the CTFG specimen under deck placement conditions.Produce final report on design, analysis, and tests on the CTFG specimen.Produce TechBrief on CTFG system.
