Course Length: Course is one full day. Course can also be split into 2 half-days, if scheduling requires. Shorter overviews are available in 1-hour segments.
The course is the official FHWA Media Training Course. It is geared for any FHWA employee who interacts with the media at least periodically. The course also includes valuable information on presentation skills and public speaking. This one-day class is highly interactive and is therefore limited to 12-15 participants. It features mock interviews and group critique sessions. Participants will learn everything from how to craft messages to how to react to sticky media situations. Participant receive a complete training manual.

MEDIA TRAINING LEVEL 1

Course length: 1 day
Description: This all-day highly interactive course is designed to provide participants with basic skills in handling media inquiries and interviews. The course covers agency media policies, message development, how to prepare for and take control of a press interview, how to establish working relationships with reporters, and how to look and sound your best. The course is also helpful for tips on how to improve presentation skills and public speaking. Participants gain hands-on experience through class exercises and videotaped mock interviews and critiques.

MEDIA TRAINING LEVEL 2

Course length: 1 day
Description: A continuation of Media Training Level 1. Participants develop additional skills in reporter relations, crisis communications, and how to plan and execute a successful media campaign. Participants gain hands-on experience through class exercises and videotaped mock interviews in how to prepare for and participate in press conferences, public meetings, and television and radio interview programs.

Effective Communications in a Public Involvement Campaign

Course length: 1 day
Description: This course begins by examining the root causes of hostilities and anger in public involvement campaigns. Participants then learn strategies to overcome these obstacles so that their organization can get its projects approved and implemented. Through class exercises and videotaped mock public meetings, participants gain practical, hands-on experience on how to incorporate an effective communications plan into the overall public involvement campaign and how to prepare for and carry out a successful public meeting. The course also provides tips on how to give effective presentations and handle hostile groups and individuals.
