PRODUCTS & SERVICES
The FHWA Resource Center offers a variety of technical assistance and training opportunities on freeway interchange design and interstate access improvements.
These are some examples of services provided to our customers:
• Review and commentary on preliminary interchange design proposals and interstate access requests. Certain access requests require approval from the FHWA Administrator and coordination with the FHWA Headquarters Office of Program Administration. The Resource Center can provide early technical assistance and supply potential solutions to challenging design issues.
• Collaboration with Divisions and their State DOT partners to develop local procedures and guidelines for processing Interstate access requests and supporting the requests with the appropriate level of documentation.
• Delivery of a focused technical assistance workshop on interchange design principles and the interstate access approval process. The workshop may be tailored to meet the specific needs of the Division depending on the key issues involved. The Safety and Design team can compare and contrast appropriate interchange types; decipher elements of the FHWA policy and provide insights on making good decisions with regard to new or modified access; review key features for the design of ramps, terminals, alignment and cross section; provide understanding of the application of FHWA design exception policies with respect to interchange features; and determine the appropriate documentation for an access request and the components of a complete safety and operational analysis.
Transportation professionals seeking training or assistance with interchange design and interstate access issues may contact the Resource Center Safety & Design team.
