Solutions

Intersection Safety Toolkits

Problem: Intersection Crashes
Intersection safety is a national priority for numerous highway-safety organizations. Driving near and through intersections is one of the most complex conditions drivers will encounter. In 2000, more than 2.8 million intersection-related crashes occurred, representing 44 percent of all reported crashes. About 8,500 fatalities (23 percent of total automobile fatalities) and almost one million crashes that resulted in injuries occurred at or within intersections.

Putting it in Perspective:
3 Million Intersections

2.7 Million Non-Signalized Intersections

300,000 Signalized Intersections

8,632 Intersection Fatalities/Year

Intersection crashes cost society $101 billion per year

Solution: Improve Public Understanding of Intersection Operation and Safety through the Intersection Safety Toolkit
What is the Intersection Safety Toolkit?
The Intersection Safety Toolkit is a set of one-page information sheets on 11 intersection safety topics:
1. The Problem
2. Basic Countermeasures
3. Pedestrian Safety
4. Human Factors
5. Intersection Safety Enforcement
6. Traffic Control Devices: Uses and Misuses
7. Red Light Running Issues
8. Red Light Cameras
9. Work Zone Intersection Safety
10. Intersection Safety: Myth versus Reality
11. Intersection Safety Resources

What are the advantages of the Intersection Safety Toolkit?
The toolkit provides "ready to use" information for public officials and local decision makers on intersection safety and its associated issues.

Successful Applications:
The Institute of Transportation Engineers has distributed the Intersection Safety Toolkits to its members; FHWA has posted the Intersection Safety Toolkits on its safety website.
