Inaugural Engineering Mechanics Conference 2008
Minneapolis, MN
Inaugural International Conference of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EM08)- Department of Civil Engineering - University of Minnesota
Mechanics has had a rich history in defining, inspiring, and enabling innovation in many scientific and technological fields. Because it provides a common rigorous foundation for numerous science and engineering disciplines, its imprint can be found in numerous critical bodies of knowledge that attempt to understand, predict, and affect the world around us. The future opportunities for the advancement and application of mechanics are limitless.
The vision of the ASCE Engineering Mechanics Institute is to be a premier organization representing engineering mechanics by effectively serving the needs of the worldwide engineering mechanics community and promoting both research and application of scientific and mathematical principles to address a broad spectrum of existing and emerging engineering and societal problems.
It is in this vein that the Inaugural International Conference of the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EM08) will be held in Minneapolis on May 18-21, 2008. EM08 will provide a major forum for the exchange of information and discussion of recent developments in, and applications of, solid and fluid mechanics. Technical sessions will highlight and promote new thrusts and innovative developments in the field regardless of the discipline that inspired them. Furthermore, EM08 will provide a forum for engineers, planners, industry representatives, citizen groups, public officials, students, and others to promote the interdependence of engineering mechanics. This forum will help cultivate an environment that allows for the anticipation of, and adaptation to new challenges that engineers face thereby facilitating professional growth to ensure these challenges are met.

6th National Seismic Conference on Bridges & Highways
Charleston, SC
Honorary Chairman - King Gee, Federal Highway Administration
"The conference in Charleston will be a great opportunity for DOTs and their consultants to obtain timely information about protecting our highway infrastructure from earthquakes and other extreme events as well. The FHWA hopes to leverage the funds that have been spent on seismic research to improve the performance of bridges and the highway system, regardless of the hazard. I encourage all to attend."
Conference Director Dr. Phil Yen, Federal Highway Administration, has announced that the theme of this conference will be "Seismic Technologies for Extreme Loads". This will open up discussion to include other hazards with the hopes of creating a synergistic approach to protective systems. Dr. Yen emphasizes that the overriding goal of the conference is to enhance the technical expertise of engineering professionals so that they can have the latest tools to mitigate the risk of damage to the highway infrastructure through design, retrofit, and other measures.
The conference is organized by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Transportation Research Board (TRB), MCEER, University at Buffalo, and the hosting agency South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).
The technical program will feature over 75 technical presentations and keynote speakers from around the world. There will be two best paper awards presented. The conference will include a student design competition, a poster session, an awards luncheon, and an optional boat tour of Charleston harbor and the recently completed Arthur Ravenel Jr. (Cooper River) Bridge. There will also be a pre-conference workshop on Sunday. Also planned is a technical exhibition where engineers and managers can talk personally with company representatives who can explain the latest technology, products and services in the field.
