Dr. Frankel is a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. He is currently project chief of the USGS National Seismic Hazard Mapping Project (since 1993). He also serves as task leader for mapping seismic hazard and site response in Seattle. Dr. Frankel received his Ph.D. in seismology from Columbia University in 1982. He was a postdoctoral fellow at CalTech from 1982-1983 and a research scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1984-1985. He started working at the USGS in 1985. His research interests include: mapping seismic hazard using probabilistic and deterministic methods on national, regional, and local scales, estimating strong ground motions for future large earthquakes, evaluating earthquake source processes, and modeling seismic-wave propagation in sedimentary basins.
