Dr. Eugene Schweig

Dr. Eugene Schweig was born St. Louis, Missouri. He received his B.S. degree in Geology from the University of Missouri, in Columbia in 1976, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from Stanford University in 1983 and 1985.

Dr. Schweig worked in Dallas for ARCO Oil and Gas Company from 1983 to 1985. He then moved to Memphis and worked as an Assistant and Associate Professor for the Center for Earthquake Research and Information of the University of Memphis from 1985 to 1991. He has been with the U.S. Geological Survey in Memphis since 1991 as a Research Geologist and as the Central United States Coordinator of the Earthquake Hazards Program. He also remains an Adjunct Professor at the University of Memphis. Dr. Schweig's research has focused on earthquake geology, particularly in the New Madrid seismic zone and the area of the Panama Canal. Most recently he has been studying the prehistoric record of earthquakes in the New Madrid region and has been trying to understand the causes of earthquakes in the region. Dr. Schweig is co-chair of an urban seismic hazard mapping effort for Memphis. He has published more than 30 articles on the New Madrid seismic zone.
