Dr. Sutterer obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Missouri-Rolla. In 1984, he joined the staff of Soil Consultants, Inc., in St. Peters, Missouri, where he remained as a geotechnical engineer for six years. After advancing to the position of Director of Consulting Services for SCI Environmental, he left to pursue doctoral studies at Purdue University. During his Ph.D. work, he followed his advisor to Georgia Institute of Technology where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1993. He joined the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering at University of Kentucky in August 1993. In 1998, he departed UK to join the faculty at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, where he is currently employed.
Dr. Sutterer's interests are in the areas of advanced ground exploration, soil dynamics/liquefaction, and geosynthetics engineering. His earthquake engineering work for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet included seismic stability assessment and priority ranking of over 400 highway embankments and slopes in western Kentucky.
Dr. Sutterer remains active in consulting, particularly in the areas of liquefaction susceptibility and slope stability. He is Chair of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Transportation Earthworks. Dr. Sutterer was selected as the National Society of Professional Engineers Young Engineer of the Year in 1996.
