Drawing of a bridge

Dr. Douglas A. Foutch

Dr. Foutch received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1970, an M.S. degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1973, and his Ph.D. degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1976.

Dr. Foutch joined the faculty of Civil Engineering in 1976 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1982 and to Professor in 1988. Dr. Foutch's principal areas of research include behavior of steel members and connections, dynamics of full-scale structures, behavior and design of bridges and buildings under dynamic loads, and fatigue of steel members and connections. He has conducted non-linear cyclic tests of steel joints and connections. He has developed innovative techniques for the identification of dynamic characteristics of structures through field testing and analysis. He has also developed improved methods for computing the response of bridges and buildings to dynamic loads. Dr. Foutch has also conducted investigations on the behavior of large size steel structures and subassemblies for strength and fatigue under cyclic loads. He is currently conducting research on the seismic design of steel frame buildings, on the response of long-span truss bridges to seismic loads, on the use of viscoelastic energy absorbers for retrofit of RC buildings, and on the evaluation of steel railway bridges through field testing. Dr. Foutch has also consulted on the design and analysis of numerous major steel and concrete structures, including the Clark Bridge, a major cable-stayed bridge crossing the Mississippi River.
