John E. Farley is Professor of Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. His book Earthquake Fears, Predictions, and Preparations in Mid-America was published by the Southern Illinois University Press in 1998. He is also the author of Sociology (fourth edition, 1998), Majority-Minority Relations (third edition, 1995), and American Social Problems: An Institutional Analysis (second edition, 1992), all published by Prentice Hall. He also guest-edited an issue of the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters focusing on social responses to the Iben Browning earthquake prediction. Professor Farley is President-elect of the Midwest Sociological Society and was President of the Illinois Sociological Association in 1997-98. He was born in Waterloo, Iowa and received his undergraduate education at Michigan State University and completed his graduate studies at The University of Michigan.
