At the park's dedication he proclaimed, "In years to come when I am asleep forever beneath the pines, thousands of families will find rest and hope in this park...". Through the years, ever increasing numbers of people have been drawn to the Park to experience the scenic beauty of this portion of the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, what President Wilson foresaw as thousands has become more than 3.3 million visitors in over 1 million families passing through the park yearly. With these numbers and the demands placed on the existing transportation system, the experience of getting into and out of the Park and passing through the Estes Valley may be more stressful than restful. The proposed transportation alternatives feasibility study will identify and evaluate opportunities to address the urgent transportation needs of this area of national significance. This will be a regional study that examines the relationship between the Estes Valley and Rocky Mountain National Park from the standpoint of transportation needs and examines and defines alternatives that meet these needs in both the near- and long-term. The study will include an implementation program defining roles and responsibilities of the plan participants, benefits of the plan, and costs, potential sources of funding, and timelines for each element of the recommended plan.
