Denver Union Station Work and Entertainment Connection
Denver, Colorado

Abstract

The Applicant seeks $175,000.00 in planning funds for the Denver Union Station Work and Entertainment Connection, a project which represents a unique and much-needed approach to the establishment and promotion of cost-effective and community-friendly alternative transportation modes and connections at a primary intermodal transportation center in an inner-city context. The three specific Station-anchored elements included in this project are:

(1) Neighborhood Electric Vehicle Hub,

(2) Full-Service Bike Station and Bike Station Network, and

(3) Historic Platte Valley Trolley.

As a result of its long term role as a regional transportation center and, more particularly, as a result of its extremely favorable location in the middle of a rapidly growing residential community, an established entertainment district and the region's most concentrated employment center, Denver's Union Station offers an exceptional venue for utilizing and anchoring these modes to target and capture a significant share of commute, entertainment, recreational, personal and household trips that would otherwise be made by conventional automobile. By expanding the focus and appeal of the specified modes to encompass and reach beyond solely commute trips, the project will serve an important role in fostering greater receptivity to alternative modes for all types of trips. As a result, it will serve as a catalyst for other future alternative transportation connections serving Downtown Denver and the greater Metropolitan Area.

The project capitalizes upon existing transportation infrastructure and provides unprecedented possibilities for private sector funding participation in the establishment of alternative transportation modes. Its results will establish fresh concepts for future transportation strategies and development patterns which will become important tools in the advancement of system and community preservation and which also will be suitable for application in a variety of urban and suburban settings.
