The majority of workers commute from other areas. Along with these workers and local visitors, an average population of 20,000 residents and 77,000 non-resident visitors will be affected by this project. Livable Waikiki - Linking Transportation, Land Use, and Environment will: 1) Develop a community-based mobility plan for Waikiki that will guide and leverage transportation investments to create a more livable Waikiki; 2) Building upon ongoing Islandwide visioning efforts, utilize highly participatory, hands-on planning tools to involve members of the Waikiki community in designing transportation systems that increase mobility while preserving historic community character; 3) Create community consensus on priorities, to enable specific projects to move from vision to action; 4) Link land use and transportation planning with environmental and cultural preservation efforts; 5) Engage private-sector business people, transportation providers, landowners, and hotel/tour operators to help recreate Waikiki as a vibrant gathering place for both residents and visitors - with a Hawaiian sense of place; and 6) Document the process and lessons learned for use by other communities.
