   

   | Livable Communities & Edge Growth: The Greater Madison County I-69 Corridor Preservation Initiative Madison County, IndianaAbstractThis project will bring together state-of-the-art innovative tools to evaluate the impacts of land use and transportation futures in the greater Madison County area by concentrating on edge growth and its debilitating effects on the consumption of land and quality of life issues. It will provide a unique, long-range, regional focus on: 1) the consequences of current land use and transportation decisions on the consumption of land; 2) the development of tools to preserve land through regulatory and analytical tools for both land use and transportation; 3) the development of a livable communities model which concentrates on preservation and creation of livable communities utilizing small towns as the paradigm; 4) the benefits possible through certain changes in the development pattern process and the development of a cost alternatives model; and, 5) the development of state-of-the-art alternative public input mechanisms for both public participation and education to produce a long-term vision for the greater county regional area. The study will focus on developing tools and methods for the orderly development of land, preservation and retrofitting of existing transportation facilities, redevelopment of land, effective urban and rural design for building communities, and creating a set of comprehensive and coordinated policies designed to reduce sprawl, auto trips, air pollution, and congestion. The project will involve the utilization of GIS, state-of-the-art participation tools such as Visual Preference SurveysTM, computer simulations, and other mechanisms for public input and education. Project products will be available in a handbook and on a web site for easy use and distribution for other communities to access and use. The greater Madison County area has a population base of over 450,000 people in a 700 square mile area with over 1.5 million people within a thirty mile radius of the county proper. Previous Page |
