The objective is to sustain and enhance the corridor's economic vitality while protecting the region's unique character and quality of life. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council have been participating in an effort to build a collective, voluntary, and participatory process for the region's stakeholders. In order to better understand the corridor's transportation needs, a task force reviewed the core issues confronting the region. While the task force identified the need for additional planning studies, it also wanted to initiate a program that would begin to promote the use of shared-ride commuting. Consequently, this proposal includes planning as well as implementation elements. The three parts of the proposed project are: - An analysis of the transportation impacts of alternative development patterns and designs;
- A workshop with local officials, business leaders, and community members from the I-495 corridor. The workshop will provide an opportunity to interact with outside experts and with counterparts from the Route 128 corridor to gain a better understanding of the state and local decisions that resulted in the current congested conditions on Route 128. It will also develop the rationale and basis for creating and implementing an I-495 strategic transportation plan; and
- A pilot carpool/vanpool leasing incentive program and an electric car station demonstration project intended to boost the amount of ridesharing in the corridor.
