Town of Bethania, North CarolinaAbstractThe Comprehensive Transportation Study: Town of Bethania will study the current and projected traffic through this historic village and develop a plan for vehicular, truck, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The town, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is one of three planned eighteenth-century Moravian settlements in North Carolina. A significant feature of the town is the street system - planned in 1759 and completely intact. The foundations of early eighteenth- and nineteenth century buildings in this important historic site are currently being destroyed due to vibrations caused by truck traffic which travels down Main Street. Particulate soot damages historic materials and finishes while seriously impacting air quality. Oversized vehicles traveling through the narrow village streets present a hazard, to pedestrians, bicyclists and local traffic. Conventional traffic engineering responses to these issues threaten both historic resources and residents' quality of life. A Community Plan, adopted in September, 1997 and attached in Appendix IV, listed "Transportation" as the highest concern voiced by the citizens of the town. The proposed transportation study would develop a plan to divert truck and vehicular traffic, plan for pedestrian (tourist) walkways and bikeways and assist in identifying additional natural or planned landscapes which should be protected from future development.
